Brad Jones, P.E., Deputy Director, Division of Construction Management, ODOT
In his first year as ODOT’s Deputy Director of the Division of Construction Management, Brad Jones was responsible for implementing the department’s largest-ever construction program with more than 900 projects totaling $2.5 billion. Prior to this appointment, Mr. Jones served as an ODOT District 6 Construction Engineer for 10 years. Ultimately, he spearheaded one of ODOT’s largest alternative delivery projects, the Columbus Crossroads Project, by developing the contract documents and taking it to construction. The $200 million downtown Columbus interchange project finished under budget and ahead of schedule. Brad is a 29-year veteran of ODOT serving in such roles as bridge engineer and senior project manager. He graduated from The Ohio State University with a B.S. in Engineering.
Laura Leffler, P.E., Ohio Division Administrator, FHWA
Laura Leffler presently serves as the Ohio Division Administrator for FHWA, a position she assumed in 2009. As Division Administrator, she directs a multi-disciplinary staff that administers the Federal-aid Highway program throughout the State to improve its transportation system. Laurie joined the FHWA Engineer Training Program in 1989, with assignments in Eastern Federal Lands; the Florida Division; former Region 4 in Altanta, Georgia; Wyoming Department of Highways and the Wyoming Division. She is a graduate of the University of Akron, where she received her BSCE.
Elizabeth Olenbush, Program Administrator, Industrial Resources Council
Elizabeth Olenbush is President of EO Associates, a WBE that provides sustainability training, environmental communications, strategic business planning and marketing services to public and private sector clients. Ms. Olenbush founded EO Associates in 1994, following five years of service as the Director of Marketing for the Steel Recycling Institute. Her work with the transportation sector began during her tenure as a contractor for the Wisconsin Recycling Market Development Board in 1995. From 1999 to 2009, Ms. Olenbush served as Executive Director for Foundry Industry Recycling Starts Today, where she was one of the founding directors of the Industrial Resources Council. She continues to provide project management services for the IRC and AFS-FIRST, in addition to Green Facilities Training through community colleges and workforce development programs in New England and the mid-Atlantic states.
Craig Landefeld, P.E., Pavements Engineer, Office of Construction Administration, ODOT
At ODOT Craig has been involved with both asphalt and concrete pavement issues and specification development. He has initiated and/or led numerous meetings and seminars on various topics with these pavement materials including presentations on ODOT’s Quality Control/Quality Assurance Concrete Specifications. As well, Craig has created and/or given instruction to both ODOT and outside industry personnel to spread the knowledge and experience he has gained. In recent years Craig has been the driving force in a number of asphalt field investigations as well as spearheading many research projects. Craig joined ODOT following a successful consulting career as a construction engineer at ADR & Associates, Inc.
Terry TerMeer, Assistant Chief, Office of Compliance Assistance and Pollution Prevention, Ohio EPA
Terrie TerMeer joined the former Ohio DNR Division of Recycling & Litter Prevention in 2003, and came with it when the division moved to Ohio EPA in 2012. In her current role as Assistant Chief of OCAPP, she serves as a member of senior management and administers the activities of the Recycling & Litter Prevention Program. Prior to her days in recycling, TerMeer served as the Chief of the Ohio Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), a program that provided employment and training opportunities to young adults in the field of conservation and natural resources. Terrie has a strong background in community affairs and government relations, including service as the Deputy Director of Special Events for the Secretary of State; Special Assistant to former Columbus Mayor Gregory S. Lashutka; Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Gahanna; and Legislative Assistant to Director Robert W. Teater for a number of years during her earlier tenure at ODNR from 1977 to 1983. Terrie is a graduate of Otterbein College with a B.S. in Life Science.
John Yzenas, Director of Technical Sales, Edw. C. Levy Co.
John J. Yzenas, Jr. is the Director of Technical Sales for the Edw. C. Levy Co. and also serves as the Technical Expert for the National Slag Association. Mr. Yzenas has been engaged in the construction and construction materials industry for over 30 years, working in operations, quality and new product development. He serves on and participates in many state and national committees dealing with aggregate issues, including TRB and ASTM, where he has chaired numerous committees. John is an ASTM International Fellow and a member of the Indiana Aggregates Association Aggregate Hall of Fame.
Dr. Dana N. Humphrey, P.E., Dean of Engineering, Professor of Civil Engineering, University of Maine
Dana N. Humphrey is Dean of Engineering at the University of Maine. He joined the University of Maine in 1986 after receiving his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Purdue University. Dr. Humphrey is a member of the boards for Educate Maine, Maine Discovery Museum, and Maine Space Grant Consortium. He has served as Chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, President of the UMaine Faculty Senate, Faculty Representative to the University of Maine System Board of Trustees, and President of the Maine Section ASCE. His research in using tire derived aggregate as lightweight fill, retaining wall backfill, thermal insulation, drainage layers for landfills, and vibration damping layers beneath rail lines has received international attention with projects in the U.S. from coast to coast as well as Canada and Australia. Maine’s governor awarded him the 1997 Special Teamwork Award for his part in the tire derived aggregate fill constructed for the Portland Jetport Interchange. Dr. Humphrey has received the Maine Distinguished Professor Award (1994), Carnegie Foundation Maine Professor of the Year (1994), Maine Civil Engineer of the Year (1998), Presidential Public Service Award (1998), and Maine Better Transportation Association Max J. Wilder Award (2006).
William H. Fair, P.E., Director of Engineering Services, Flexible Pavements of Ohio
Bill Fair is Director of Engineering Services for Flexible Pavements of Ohio, the state asphalt paving association. Mr. Fair joined FPO in 1997 after 29 years with the Ohio DOT, mostly in maintenance and operations, but the last two years as Planning and Programs Administrator in District 8. Bill is a registered professional engineer in Ohio and a 1968 graduate of the Ohio State University with a degree in civil engineering. He is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), and the American Society of Highway Engineers (ASHE).
Josh Hayden, Technical Sales Consultant, Kurtz Bros., Inc.
Josh Hayden is a Technical Sales Consultant for Kurtz Bros., Inc. and has been with KBI since 2003. During this time he has worked in various roles including hardscape technical rep and commercial construction representative. In 2007 Josh was certified by the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute to teach the ICPI’s paver installation, permeable pavement installation, and commercial concrete paver installation courses. The ICPI was the beginning of Josh’s education in base construction, compaction, and pavement design.
Dr. Tarunjit Butalia, P.E., Research Scientist & CCP Coordinator, the Ohio State University
Dr. Tarunjit S. Butalia serves as the Director of the Coal Combustion Products Program at The Ohio State University where he is also a Research Scientist in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geodetic Engineering. Dr. Butalia obtained his Ph.D. degree in Engineering from OSU in 1997. He is a registered Professional Engineer. He has provided leadership to several CCP research and demonstration projects totaling over $25 million in the last 15 years and has authored, presented and/or published more than 150 technical papers and book articles. He serves on the Advisory Board of the International Pittsburgh Coal Conference and is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Coal Combustion and Gasification Products.
John Dingeldein, P.E., Senior Principal/Vice President, Soil and Materials Engineers
John Dingeldein is Vice President and Senior Principal in Soil and Materials Engineers (SME), a midwest consulting engineering firm with eleven offices in Ohio, Indiana and Michigan. In 2011, SME joined forces with EDP Consultants, where John had been one of the principals for more than 20 years. Mr. Dingeldein has extensive experience with designing many types of infrastructure projects using a variety of recycled and industrial materials in projects for public and private sector clients in northeast Ohio.
Michael Zock, Managing Partner, MKB Company, Inc.
Following an earlier career in information technology, Michael Zock started using Compost-based materials for Erosion Control and Site Stabilization in 2006 when he became involved in site development work in western Pennsylvania. He founded MAZCON Manufacturing and Logistics in 2011 to provide Erosion Control products to the Marcellus/Utica Exploration area. In 2012 his company formed a new partnership with Kurtz Brothers of Central Ohio (MKB Company) and launched the “Diamond Sock” Compost Filter Sock brand. Today, MKB Company provides products to customers throughout 20 states through its network of retail distributors. Mike has a B.S. from the University of Pittsburgh in Information Science and 15 years of experience in Network Engineering and Design. He was involved in the design and implementation of networks for companies like Westinghouse, Microsoft, and Disney as well as various governmental agencies such as the Patent and Trade Office. In his off-hours, Mike enjoys golfing and fishing.
Victor (Lee) Gallivan, PE, Recycled Materials Program Manager, FHWA
Mr. Gallivan has worked for the FHWA for 39 years in various field-engineering positions in five states, winding up his career in the Office of Pavement Technology and now the Office of Asset Management, Pavement and Construction in Washington D.C., from which he plans to retire in January 2015. Most recently, he has been involved in Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA), Quality Control/Quality Assurance Programs, and Recycled Materials including Reclaimed Asphalt, Shingles, and various recycled materials organizations. Mr. Gallivan has also worked with the National Highway Institute (NHI) on new and updated training materials for Quality Assurance and the use of reclaimed materials for various recycling applications. Mr. Gallivan has been also instrumental in the national advancement of new technologies for the Federal Highway Administration particularly on Intelligent Compaction Technology for Soils, Aggregate and HMA materials.
